Grant Sources

Potential Funding Sources for Boating: Nationally and in the RYA Southern Region

National Grants

The Sport England site captures and briefly explains a number of the national grant providers. Most national grant providers will want evidence that local councils and sports bodies actively support your project and that some matching funding will be provided by other grant providers and the organisation requesting the grant.

One relatively new Sport England grant is called Inspired Facilities, which is focussed on making it easier for local community and volunteer groups to improve and refurbish sports clubs or transform non sporting venues into modern grassroots sport facilities. A number of sailing clubs received grants of circa £50K from this grant source in 2011.

The Humber Sports Partnership provides a guide to grant sources. This document can be accessed on their website on:

Their website also has a simple guide to apply for funding

Area Grant Sources

Commercial Grant Sources

Many large corporations will provide grants to meet what they perceive as their corporate social responsibility and to gain positive publicity. Small local grants of up to £1000 can often be initiated at local level with Public Relations Departments, or even by individual employees, in companies such as BT and ExxonMobil although in some cases authorisation will probably come from their HQ
For example, ExxonMobil's Volunteer Involvemet Programme at Fawley is a scheme that provides grants to recognise the contribution made by employees and their families who contribute their time, talent and energy to schools, charities and non-profit making organisations. For details, contact Alison Jones, ExxonMobil Community Affairs Advisor 0n 02380 896799 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. .
For major grants, the activity or project must align closely with their public relations and corporate social responsibiliy strategies. Example of the conditions large UK corporation may put on providing sports sponsorship are:

  • It should be used in the context of brand building, fostering business relationships and integrated marketing activity.
  • Sponsorship of individual sport teams, may not be encouraged.
  • Proposals may need director level approval before any commitments are given.
  • Proposals for sponsorship of individuals at any level may be discouraged.
  • Sponsorship of events or tournaments ishould ideally be of national or international importance and run over a period of time.

Whilst sailing provides a positive message as being sustainable and as an activity that encourages community involvement at all ages, it can be difficult and time consuming to convince large corporations that they should provide sponsorship.
